The humble yet fascinating succulent has been incorporated into gardens, landscape design and decor for centuries.

Succulents are well suited to warm climates with low rainfall and in the past had the reputation of a desert plant. However, they also thrive in coastal areas and are now seen in gardens everywhere. Succulents are the ideal addition to any garden due to their drought resistance, architectural forms, array of colours and ease of maintenance.

There is a succulent to suit every garden style, pot and space, from a small rockery to a large formal garden. Whether you require a ground cover or a feature plant, there is a succulent for every situation.

Some form small rosettes, some trail and some will grow into a small tree and, depending on the species, will provide you with striking and interesting foliage or flower colour. With so many interesting colours, textures and forms of succulents, there is no shortage of design possibilities and applications. Billabong Garden Complex’s annual succulent show is a great way to obtain ideas, inspiration and advice.

There will be succulents to both admire and buy, themed display areas, traditional-style potted succulents and quirky and unique items potted with succulents. It is an opportunity to see just how versatile these plants are and how they can be used as a feature in the home or backyard. This year there will be a special guest appearance on the Saturday from renowned succulent expert, speaker and author Attila Kapitany.

Attila will display and offer for sale a range of his rare and new breed succulents, provide information and advice and will be happy to sign copies of his latest book, which will be available for purchase. A popular feature of the show is the potted succulent competition.

The competition allows people to enter their potted succulents for the opportunity to win some great prizes. This year Billabong will award a prize in two categories: people’s choice and Attila’s choice.
Entries are limited and close on Friday, September 15.

Terms and conditions and the entry form can be collected from Billabong or downloaded from the website at

The Billabong Succulent Show will be held from Friday, October 13, to Sunday, October 15 at Billabong Garden Complex, 295 Numurkah Road, Shepparton.
