The overwhelm of reality television

As I settled in on Sunday night, ready to unwind and relax before another big week, I was met with an onslaught of programs trying to 'hook' me and keep me glued to the channel.

Over the last week, the general public has been swamped with the number of reality television across free-to-air channels.

As I settled in on Sunday night, ready to unwind and relax before another big week, I was met with an onslaught of programs trying to 'hook' me and keep me glued to the channel. Sometimes they used catchy pop music and other times a dramatic cut before an ad break.

It all works, especially if you've had a big weekend and are looking for a mind numbing activity to get you through until bedtime. However, when looking for something to watch during the week, I felt as though I had over committed and was now a little lost.

It really makes me wonder, how many shows is too many? We simply don’t have enough hours in the day to watch everything that’s out there at the moment.

I really admire people who have the ability to maintain many shows at the one time. I even know someone who keeps a diary to help them remember when things come out.

For me personally, I think that kind of commitment would actually cause some unnecessary stress and pressure.

There is also an element of FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out –  that comes along with a lot of these shows. Everyone’s watching, so I’ve got to watch too right?

I think I may need to give them all a try and just hope that I don’t get too invested. At this rate, I’ll learn everything about finding love, learning to cook and general survival skills from my couch.
